Hi! I’m Cormeshia. I was diagnosed with Stage 3b Rectal Cancer at the age of 40. As a young, person of color, I feel it’s necessary to share my story for people who look like me.
What was your cancer diagnosis and how was it discovered?
I was diagnosed with Stage IIIb Rectal Cancer after a 3cm mass was found in my colon during a colonoscopy.
What is the biggest piece of advice you have for newly diagnosed patients?
Research from reliable resources. Make your mental health as much of a priority as your physical health, and and become part of your type cancer community.
What is the most important thing you learned from your cancer experience?
The human body is amazing!
What was the most difficult aspect of organizing your care/community?
Allowing myself to be vulnerable and share my story.
What are three words you would use to describe your cancer experience?
Shocking. Dastardly. Lonely.
Are there products, services, experiences or physicians that you couldn't be without?
My insurance provider offered a mental health program through Able To. I had a therapist and behavioral coach during treatment. It was a tremendous help.
